October 12th, 2006 - Haven’t had our first frost yet….
but it snowed last night!!!! It only accumulated on rooftops, tables, and a few leaves. No evidence of frost, so I don’t know if it counts as the first frost or not.
And last weekend, it was in the 70s. And this weekend, it will be in the 60s.
Knowing it was coming, I had fun in the garden after dinner. That’s said quite ironically, because it was freezing cold already, very windy, and wet from earlier rain. I harvested the last of the beans (probably won’t dry, but can be used as green beans) and a few green tomatoes. I wanted to get more, but my fingers were already numb and I had a few other tasks to complete so I stopped. Brought in my sprinkler and drained its hose. Brought the potatoes and apples in from the back garage; the potatoes are stored in the basement but I left the apples in the back entry. That’s probably colder than the basement right now. (These are the apples for cider and sauce so not terribly worried about them anyway.)
I was nervous about the carrots since their shoulders stick above ground. I covered them with a blanket held down with rocks and squash/tomato vines. Probably wasn’t necessary but I felt better doing it. Forgot to take it off this morning; I was distracted taking the garbage out. (Oh, heck, did I latch the gate behind me???? I hope I did….. During the summer, I take the garbage out before breakfast, so doing it as I left for work was non-routine. Since I go back in the house usually, I don’t handle the gate right away. So I may have just walked on down the driveway and never looked back. Well, Eric will let me know if I did since the dogs will leave after breakfast…..)
