December 8th, 2004 - Four-Season Harvest by Eliot Coleman
Good book about how to grow veggies year-round. A little too much for my level of having had a garden for just one year! Coleman details how to build all sorts of greenhouses, tunnels, cold frames, and root cellers. I need to stick with just getting a summer crop going! There’s an extensive listing of veggies with planting, rotation, growing, storage, and variety tips.
Some ideas I got:
- undersowing: plant green manure (compost) crops after others are established. For instance, there’s plenty of space underneath corn! Just wait a month or so.
- red cabbage is excellent for sauerkraut (who would have known?)
- garlic: don’t plant where cabbage was the prior year. Try different varieties till you find one that works in your garden. Plant in fall for a better harvest. Book: Growing Great Garlic by Ron Engeland, Filaree Productions 1991.
- spinach is a wonderful last August planting. Spinach is lousy in hot days.
